On the underside of the barrel there is an eight digit serial number. On the lens mount there are no production codes. According to a couple of resources online there should be either a code containing a few letters or on newer lenses a 10 digit serial number. - If you want to determine the age of an EF-S lens, the best way is to compare the serial number with other serial numbers. For example I have 17 EF-S 10-22mm lenses with serial numbers ranging from 27xxxxxx to 68xxxxxx, and I have 11 EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 lenses with serial numbers ranging from 39xxxxxx to 76xxxxxx.

Canon has been transitioning to a 10-digit lens serial number (starting in 2008 with the Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens) and ending the inclusion of a separate manufacturing date code. While date codes and the shorter serial number are still found on some lenses, this inclusion will likely end completely. We loved the date code because it made aging a lens easy. However, now we can age a lens based on the serial number alone. In the 10 digit numbers, I do understand the DD C SSSSSSS as explained. Charles LOG IN TO REPLY |

How do you know which year the letter (for example) A equals? Is it 2012, 1986 or 1960? There's little or no likelyhood of any lenses being in production long enough to have the same date code as an earlier example. 1Dx2 (2), 5DSR, 1Ds3, 1D4, 5D2(590nm), 5D2(720nm) EF600 EF400 EF300-II EF300 EF200 EF200-II EF180L EF135L EF100 EF85-II EF50L TS-E17/4 TS-E24L-II TS-E45 TS-E90 MP-E65 EF70-200-II EF24-70/2.8-II EF16-35/4 EF8-15/4 EF11-24/4 Zeiss 15/2.8 21/2.8 25/2 28/2 35/1.4 35/2 50/2 85/1.4 100/2 135/2 T/C's L-SC & a WIFE!
